Secret Falls: Discover a Hidden Gem in the Highlands! Guide

Secret Falls, also known as Big Laurel Falls, is a stunning and relatively secluded waterfall located near Highlands, North Carolina. Unlike some of the more easily accessible waterfalls in the area, reaching Secret Falls requires a short hike, adding to its allure and sense of discovery. The reward is a beautiful cascade surrounded by lush forest, offering a peaceful and immersive natural experience. The name "Secret Falls" hints at its hidden nature and the fact that it's less well-known than some of the other waterfalls in the Highlands area. While there isn't a documented history specifically about the falls, it's likely been a local favorite for generations, known only to those willing to venture off the beaten path. The surrounding forest is rich in biodiversity and likely holds historical significance for the Cherokee people who once inhabited the region. The main activity at Secret Falls is hiking to the waterfall and enjoying its beauty. The hike is a moderate 1.5-mile round trip, involving some uneven terrain and a creek crossing (which can be challenging depending on water levels). Wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for potentially slippery conditions. Swimming is possible in the pool at the base of the falls, but be aware of the water temperature and potential hazards. There are no specific culinary traditions associated with Secret Falls, but the town of Highlands offers a variety of dining options to satisfy your appetite after your hike.
